The United Nations (UN), acknowledging an UNESCO resolution, declared the 2009 to be the International Year of Astronomy (IYA2009). It will be a unique opportunity to introduce the general public to the wonders of the Universe and to its amazing multi-cultural value, as well as its science.

All around the world a lot of events will be organized, to invite people to look at the stars. The Virtual Telescope will give its contribution, offering a number of free shows to the worldwide community. It was already awarded using the official logos.

Events.

Here are some of the main projects:

- 27 March 2009: First Robotic Messier Marathon Online
- 1-2 April 2009: "The Universe Never Sleeps" - Observing the sky for 24 hours!
- 2 April 2009: International Competition "Urban Skies: Spy the Heavens from your City!"
- 2 - 5 April 2009: "100 Hours of Remote Astronomy"!
- 9 - 11 July 2009: "Galileo, Jupiter and Neptune: three old friends"
- 22-24 October 2009: "Galilean Nights"
- December 2009: "Galileo, Jupiter and Neptune: three old friends"
- 7 January 2010: "A Night with Galileo: Jupiter, Pleiades and the Moon"
