B33, the Horsehead nebula - Ori
One of the most famous dark nebulae, Barnard 33 - the "Horsehead" - takes its glory from its unique shape: an horse head, of course! It was recognized on photographic plates by Williamina Fleming in 1888. Its distance is estimated in about 1600 light-years. This image was obtained with the PW17 unit, part of the Virtual Telescope Project. A total of 12 exposures, with 5 minutes of integration each and taken with a Baader, 7nm H-Alpha filter, were averaged. Images were unguided, completely trusting the Paramount ME mount. The CCD camera is a SBIG STL-6303E. The image scale is of 1.3 "/pixel.
