Lightcurve of 2006 RZ, obtained by G. Masi and S. Foglia on 30 Sept. 2006 with thel Virtual Telescope

On Oct. 6 2006, the asteroid 2006 RZ, discovered on Sept. 4 2006 by H. Michels and belonging to the Potentially Hazardous Asteroids group, approached our planet within a distance of 2 millions of chilometers. This approach was particularly well visible from Italy.

The Virtual Telescope organized two special live shows (5 and 6 Oct.) and both registered a nice success. On those dates, the object was moving quite fast against the stars, as visible from the image and movie above, collected during the public events.

The previous days, G. Masi e S. Foglia used the Virtual Telescope to get a lightcurve to estimate its rotational period. It resulted a bit shorter than 5 hours, in accordance with the estimate of Pravec et al. (personal communication).
