*Official Report about 100HRA at the Virtual Telescope*

1. Introduction

The Virtual Telescope is very proud to announce that, together with the100HA staff, we organized a new, official global event in the framework of the 100 Hours of Astronomy IYA2009 Cornerstone Project.

It is called "100 Hours of Remote Astronomy" (100HRA) : a number of remote telescopes worldwide will be available for free during the 2-5 April time-span, to help people discovering and sharing the wonders of the Universe in real time.

The Virtual Telescope will be available at no cost from 2 to 5 April, both for night and day observing! A maximum of 30 minutes of observing time per user is allowed. To maximize our chances to cover the worldwide community, we will limit the requests from a given country to 5 (or 10, depending on the request numbers). An astronomer onsite will comment live the observing session on an audio/video streaming, also providing assistance to the user.

While a given user is enjoying our telescopes, you can see what she/he is observing, in real time!

In order to use our telescopes yourself, you just need to book your observing time. Please, follow the simple instructions below and join  the 100 Hours of Remote Astronomy event, no matter your previous astronomical experience. Wherever you are, whenever you want, the Universe is yours to discover!

Is this your first experience ever with a telescope? Here is your cosmic menu!

For those who are attracted by the 100HRA opportunity to cross the Universe with a powerful telescope but have no ideas about their destinations, we would like to remember that these nights there are a lot of wonderful and distant galaxies out there! Some of their names are M51, M63, M81, M64, M101, M66. Then, you have some great clusters of ancient stars, like M3, M13, M92... and dying suns like M97 and M57. But don not forget the Moon, the Sun... and Saturn! Of course this is just a surviving list and you are invited to find your own route!

Instructions: your five, easy steps to the real Universe, live!

1) First, choose which telescope you would like to use - solar H-alpha telescope (day) or normal telescope (night) - and your observing mode - live or images on request.
2) Second, choose your observing date and time. Date goes from 2 to 5 April (choose one); daily (Sun) observing time goes from 9:00 to 15:00; night observing time goes from 18:30 to 04:00. All times are UT (GMT). A maximum of 30 minutes of time per user is allowed. Check time availability here.
3) Third: click here to send your request by email to info@virtualtelescope.eu, filling it with the preferences above. Make sure your email address is provided! Also, make sure you send your time request at least 12 hours in advance.
4) Forth: wait for confirmation/feedback by our staff.
5) Fifth: follow the instructions in the feedback and prepare to enjoy your 100 Hours of Remote Astronomy adventure! You may also read the quick User's Manual of the Virtual Telescope.

Time is assigned on "first come, first served" basis. In case of bad weather, the session will be cancelled. A FAQ about the Virtual Telescope is available.

Please, send your feedback to help improving our service!
